An anti-correlation between X-ray luminosity and Hα equivalent width in X-ray binaries

چکیده
We report an anticorrelation between continuum luminosity and the equivalent width (EW) of the Hα emission line in X-ray binary systems. The effect is evident both in a universal monotonic increase in Hα EW with time following outbursts, as systems fade, and in a comparison between measured EWs and contemporaneous X-ray measurements. The effect is most clear for black hole binaries in the low/hard X-ray state, which is prevalent at X-ray luminosities below ∼ 1% Eddington. We do not find strong evidence for significant changes in line profiles across accretion state changes, but this is hampered by a lack of good data at such times. The observed anti-correlation, highly significant for black hole binaries, is only marginally so for neutron star systems, for which there are far less data. Comparison with previously established correlations between optical and X-ray luminosity suggest that the line luminosity is falling as the X-ray and optical luminosities drop, but not as fast (approximately as LHα ∝ L X ∝ L ∼0.7 opt ). We briefly discuss possible origins for such an effect, including the optical depth, form of the irradiating spectrum and geometry of the accetion flow. Further refinement of the relation in the future may allow measurements of Hα EW to be used to estimate the luminosity of, and hence the distance to, X-ray binary systems. Beyond this, further progress will require a better sample of spectro-photometric data.

Orbital period–Hα correlation in Be star/X-ray binaries?
Reig, Fabregat & Coe (1997) plotted the equivalent width of Hα emission against the orbital period for several Be star/X-ray binary systems, and find a correlation. If instead of the equivalent width, which is a relative quantity, the luminosity of Hα emission, which is an absolute quantity, is used the correlation is not found.
متن کاملA new correlation for Be/X-ray binaries: the orbital period-Hα equivalent width diagram
A correlation between the orbital period and the strength of the Hα line in Be/X-ray binaries has been found. Those systems with shorter orbital periods show less emission in Hα than those with longer orbital periods. The neutron star appears to act as a barrier which prevents the formation of a extended disk in systems with short orbital period.

A remarkable correlation between the Hα emission line and the radio behaviour of LS I+61◦303 over its ∼4 yr modulation is discovered. The radio outburst peak is shifted by a quarter of the ∼4 yr modulat ion period (about 400 days) with respect to the equivalent width of the Hα emission line variability. The onset of the LS I+61◦303 radio outbursts varies in phase with the changes of the Hα emis...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملDoubling the number of Be/X-ray binaries in the SMC
A correlation of X-ray source and Hα emission-line object catalogues in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) shows that more than two thirds of the optically identified Be stars in Be/X-ray binaries are found as emission-line objects in the catalogues. On the basis of this result we propose up to 25 X-ray sources mainly from recent ROSAT catalogues as new Be/Xray binaries and give their likely opti...
